Hello there -

I see development for 2.0, and still development for 1.8.x, but what about 1.9.x? Huh
most probably we will not have 1.9 series of MyBB. see MyBB version system
I guess, I figured out. MyBB goes by even numbers in the major releases: 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0?
Yes, odd numbers are reserved for alpha/beta versions. The beta version of 1.8 was 1.7 for instance.

Does that mean the MyBB 2.0 Alpha is really MyBB 1.9?

To prevent confusion I doubt it would officially be called that. 2.0 Alpha is 2.0 Alpha.

I would assume no, with 2.0 being a complete rewrite, it's separate from the 1.x.x series entirely.
Yes, 2.0 is being developed and will be maintained in accordance with common practices, including the versioning system. Testing versions will be denoted explicitly as Alpha, Beta, RC, etc.
The 2.0 sub-packages (from other repositories on our GitHub organization) will strictly follow semantic versioning to make compatibility management easier for developers, whereas the main 2.x package versions will be incremented at Team's discretion to make them more user-friendly (sentimetal/romantic versioning - http://dafoster.net/articles/2015/03/14/...ersioning/).
