im moving servers and the new one has a later version on mysql and i cant seem to upload my forum database, i get error 1064..

any ideas on what I should do?

What's the error you're getting with the newer MySQL version?

i get error 1064- You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1' at line 1 (256)

You can also prevent this, if you know the MySQL version of the destination server, by selecting the appropriate MySQL Compatibility mode when you make the database backup with phpMyAdmin. I think with new versions of phpMyAdmin you can also choose the MySQL compatibility mode when you import a database backup, so you'd most likely want to choose MYSQL40 if you're using MySQL 4
