I have a banner made up for the header of the forums can someone please tell me how to set it? would greatly appreciate a little nudge in the right direction

You want to do what? you mean you want to add a custom header if so you can edit your header templates in ACP > Templates & Themes > Templates > (active theme/Default theme) > Header templates and do whatever you want to do.

The easiest way is use "My Advertisements" plugin. You can add banners to Header, Footer and after the post easily.
