you can use First/Last Post/PM Preview plugin or Thread Tooltip Preview plugin

Unfortunately there is no other way that did not work?

one of the suggested plugins should work. what is your forum url & which theme you are using ?

If you would like to make the avatars bigger just change the .css and fix the width & height.

As for the tooltip this should work perfectly wether it's a custom theme or not.
