I would like to see an option where new registrations can tick a box to join additional usergroups if they are available.

I posted about it a year ago, but it never got an answer.

I'm with this 100%, users should be shown this on the registration page.

I can see this being useful for a lot of purposes, maybe even those "roleplaying" forums you sometimes see. Usergroup conditionals would also be a handy feature to have, i.e. "User cannot be a member of both X and Y groups at the same time".
