I was wondering how to make my catergories look like this, than the classic look of regular forums.

Oh that's a neat forum display. Looks awfully familiar.

You want to change your forumdisplay/forum templates so they work as inline-blocks instead of blocks, you also want to change the width to 30% or so so you can have them next to eachother. You can follow Andrews post to assign icons/colors to them.
