Schema.org is backed by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Yandex.
Google currently uses the standards provided in it to enhance certain search results.

It's already been implemented in several forum software including NodeBB and XenForo.

I think we should include it in the new theme where it makes sense to do so.
NodeBB, if I recall, was extremely meticulous with it and used it everywhere possible.
XenForo is a lot more frugal, perhaps too frugal with it and just marks up the users and the breadcrumbs.

I think the posts could benefit from being marked up as-well, perhaps as a "CreativeWork" with a specific user as an "author", the more specialist types might not fit forum posts too well considering the vast number of things a thread covers, and CreativeWork is the least specific type of that nature.

Agree with this. One of the Schema features that I used on my own forum was to display the thread rating as stars (as in the ones used for reviews) in Google search results, along with the thread OP as the author. Smile
Agreed, it will be great to see this in MyBB 1.10
