MyBB has a future because a person can basically do anything they want with MyBB. It's a blank template for artists who code. Don't look at MyBB as a forum but look at it as an engine, you can build, tear apart, add parts, you can do whatever you want with this engine. You can change, style, and create any kind of look and function imaginable. Yes, MyBB has a future, but the future is what you do with it.
As expected, nothing happened.

What were you expecting to happen? That salty comment serves no purpose.
How is this relevant to this thread?
Maybe it's the content of your website that is at fault, not because of you using MyBB software.

Ah, Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

Apparently, some people need their stupidity spelled out.
I am new to Mybb, but I love MyBB and I believe that it has a bright future.

That nicely sums it up.
Love this software. Reddit may have killed traditional forums for me but MyBB’s flexibility is the reason I love using it.
I was just discussing with someone about them opening a new forum with MyBB. I told them to use other software. MyBB is way too far behind when it comes to mobile compatibility. MyBB thought they needed to use a PHP Framework in 2.0 in order to be more modern and speed up development. Meanwhile it went on for years and we are still not on a default responsive theme.
I reported a vulnerability in MyBB months ago that exists in all default version of 1.8x and it's still not patched and released by the dev team. They even hid my Github post about it because they have a policy to keep exploits private. Even though at least 3 "hackers" know about it. Unreal. It's irresponsible.
I tried months back to spark life into 1.9x development with a $1000 bounty for a quick release. Never happened and months later still no 1.9x. Not even the 1.8.20 with the exploits fixed.
MyBB is done imho. The only people who should use it are legacy sites which are too integrated to move to other software. No way would I start a new forum using MyBB. This software has the same future as phpBB. Which is that it will just exist as-is with almost no new development to advance the software.
phpBB 3.0 (3x is their latest branch) was released in 2008. Think about that. You'll never see a phpBB 4.0 just like you'll never see MyBB 2.0. MyBB 1.8x is now 5 years old and feeling it too.
The excuse that the team is unpaid volunteers is a poor one. Either they commit to development or get replaced by people who are. And if no one wants to replace them then this project is dead. If making the project paid or having a commercial support version speeds up development then do that too.
I get it that projects are time-consuming. But the MyBB team is being counted on to deliver a solid product with timely updates and a good direction to all the admins who use the software.
Who can really say they've been happy with the pace and direction of MyBB development in the past 5 years? And don't lie just to be nice. Be honest to yourself and the community.
I took the steps needed this year to make my largest MyBB forum responsive. Waiting for the team to do it no longer seemed viable. Now I need API options and features like push notifications. MyBB is concerned with TWIG integration which no one outside of the team really cares about. That was the same way with using Laravel in 2.0.
You really want to know what will save MyBB? A proper fork with a direction to upgrade the software to some modern features. I stopped having faith in MyBB team a long time ago. They are nice people with reasonable skills overall so it's not like I don't think they aren't capable. For whatever reason, things are not being done in a timely manner and the community is continually told to just wait. We are well beyond the point of waiting and being patient. There should be a sense of urgency now.
I'm sure I hurt some feelings with my post. It was intended as honesty and not written with disrespect. Unfortunately being honest means having to write things the team doesn't want to read. I didn't create the problem. I'm just pointing it out bluntly after 13 pages of this thread mind-you.
Remember those developers you were going to get to contribute to MyBB 1.9? Yeah, so do I. I've yet to see any contribution from them whatsoever...
It's always nice to see complaints, definitely makes the team feel even more inclined to pour their free time into something for no reward.
1.8.20 is currently in a pre-release state, and should be released this week unless something goes horribly wrong when we update the community forums.
The new theme for 1.9.0 is almost complete now and should be merged within a week of 1.8.20 being released.
I know we're slow. Everybody else on the team knows we're low. If I could wave a magic wand and release 1.9 tomorrow, don't you think I would? We'd all love to have more time to contribute and to have MyBB thrive. Unfortunately, the team try as hard as they can and it never seems to be enough. If we look back at the commit and merge activity on GitHub, it's obvious that the number of people contributing has decreased massively in the last couple of years. Fewer developers are obviously going to struggle to keep up the old pace of change.
I honestly don't know what we can do to speed things up. All of the active members of the development and SQA team hold down full time jobs and are distributed across several different timezones. Most of us are also juggling several other MyBB tasks like responding to the several daily emails we receive to the MyBB email address(es).
I will always welcome constructive input, and would definitely welcome contributions in the form of code and testing any day of the week. But threads like these never fail to make me feel less motivated to continue working on a project I've poured the last decade into.
