You don't need to upgrade to 1.6.15. You can upgrade directly from 1.6.5 to 1.8.14.
Please follow this steps for upgrade:
1. Put your forum offline
2. Take database backup & download custom files if you have them
3. Deactivate all plugins
4. Upload new version files (just overwrite old ones)
5. Run upgrade script by visiting YOURURL/install/upgrade.php

EDIT: As Ikerepc said, You don't need to upgrade to 1.6.15, use full upgrade package.
But make sure you keep backup with you. Follow the documentation of MyBB upgrade.
