I have a group set up that receives an email on a weekly basis.

I would like all users created the forum to automatically join this group. 

The main group is "Registered" which I'm happy with but I would like to have an additional group that users automatically join.

Can anyone help here?

you can try using default profile plugin which was coded for an older version of MyBB
see also changing the plugin compatibility to try it on MyBB 1.8.x
