I wouldn't call it unnecessary, but you're pobably right, I don't see something like this happening, at least not for 1.10. A guy can dream though, right.

I think 2.0 definitely needs to have this functionality, though, imho.

It depends on when the template system is switched out. 2.0 will have a completely new way of doing templates.
