Will MyBB 1.9 have a sidebar with the latest posts like shown in the 2.0 mockups?

It doesn't currently, and there aren't any plans to add it at the moment.

Version 1.9 will be fully responsive.

Yes, that's one of the big features of MyBB 1.9.xx

Also, if I have been following this closely, there will be light and dark default themes as well.

The last I heard, the dark theme has been shelved.

Justin created a dark version of the theme by simply tweaking some SASS variables. As far as I know, he plans to continue supporting that.

I see. I recalled an old conversation. Nice to know that there is support for a dark theme in the core. I suggested a dark theme in the first place

Could the group images be CSS based as well?

We're aiming to support both the existing functionality with images and also add the CSS ones like you see here on the forums.
