I’m trying to set up a new forum, but when ever I make any change I have to re-log into the admin panel.

what is your forum url, exactly which version of MyBB you are using & which theme ?
how did you install MyBB forum - is it through a single click installer ?
does forum front end login & browsing around different topics work fine ?
^ if front end login is working and if admin panel login has problems then
that could be due to incompatible theme or mis-configuration [or a server issue]
your forum's current theme is not compatible with
MyBB 1.8.x
its better to install & use a fully compatible theme.
