when I click an forum i just get an error from my host (see pic)

This is because you have Search Engine Friendly URLs on and you didn’t rename the htaccess.txt file to .htaccess in your forums root.

To disable Search Engine Friendly URLs go to

Admin CP -> Configurations -> Server and Optimization Options -> Enable search engine friendly URLs?

Set this to Automatic or Disabled.
