So my e-mail system is incredibly confusing. 
About 50% of the time, it works flawlessly. The other times I get one of the following errors:

The mail server is not ready, it did not respond with a 220 status message.	

or

The server did not understand the EHLO command	

I have contacted my web host for support but I don't know how to replicate the problem. I have people register with a gmail account with no issues but then another person with a gmail gets an error.

Are you using PHP mail or SMTP mail?

Which port are you using and are you setting as SSL or TLS?

If SMTP, there's a big chance your issue lies in there. Make sure the port is correct and the encryption type as well.
