Try Font-Awesome 5 SVG Sprite, which is anyway going to be adapted in future MyBB.
I have my own Icon Font + SVG designed for MyBB but I can't share as it contains MyBB logo and other things which is not official.

Yes, you can use this system to add a FontAwesome icon.
It would look like this:
