I think you are referring to the classic vs. standard post bit template. The easiest way to force it is to go to MyBB Admin Panel -> Templates -> (your theme) -> Post Bit Templates, and copy whatever is in postbit_classic and overwrite the "postbit" template with it.
There is actually a setting in the User CP for this, so the disadvantage to copying the template is that there is now a useless setting. As such, this technically isn't the "correct" way to go about doing this, but many people have done it this way with no issues.
