How do I view whether my forum allows registered users to post without need for admin approval? And how do I change this parameter as an admin?

in your ACP go to Forums & Posts.
click on the forum that you want to require threads/posts to be moderated.
click on the Permissions tab
click on Edit Permissions next to Registered Users
click on the Moderation tab
Check-mark Moderate new posts & Moderate new threads

Thank you for your clear instructions. All the checkboxes were unchecked and I left them that way. I believe this gives users the ability to post without needing any approval, which is what I want (this forum is secure and devoted to trusted users).
(Meta) The configuration settings are easy to use once one is familiar with them, but there is an unnecessary learning curve. Better documentation might include a list of most of the admin tasks that arise and the steps to accomplish each.
