Full Version: How do I merge an older Invision Power Board with MyBB? [edited tile]

Hi

I have an [very] old version of an Invision Power Board that was hosted on a server.  The hosting company either went bankrupt, or were bought out, and all sites on their servers were being transferred to a new server.

For some reason my site couldn't be transferred so I was left to sort it out myself.  I found a new host and tried to transfer my board across but something went 'wrong' and the board wasn't visible.

The new hosts support is only customer support and not tech support so they were no use to me whatsoever.

In lieu of my Invision PB I set up a MyBB, and now I'm trying to merge the Invision PB with the MyBB and I'm completely lost...

I downloaded the merge system and unzipped it, and now I have to upload something somewhere...

Can someone help with what the "something" is and where the "somewhere" is...? please

T.I.A.
most probably conversion to MyBB should be possible
can you tell us your IPB version ..

you have to host your IPB database on the same server where you have MyBB

merge named folder [with contents] from the merge system pack
should be uploaded to your MyBB files server
(where you have MyBB's index.php , global.php , xmlhttp.php .. etc)

visiting forumURL/merge should load initial screen of the conversion

more details => running the Merge System
Thanks for responding

I can't remember the exact version but it was 3. something

okay, how do I do that...?  I did try to do that weeks ago but something went wrong. I don't know what went wrong and the host's support staff couldn't tell me other than "yes the database is there" (it's not there now after they'd messed around with it), I couldn't drag and drop anything, and I couldn't use the "browse" facility I'd click on the folder, and nothing happened...

And now you've completely lost me...  Confused

I've downloaded the merge system and unzipped it, beyond that I cannot do anything...

according to https://docs.mybb.com/1.8/merge/running/...on-initial I should see something saying "welcome", there is nothing in the unzipped files saying "welcome"  Confused

thanks
do you have IPB forum's database backup stored somewhere else ?
And are you familiar with the database manager (eg. phpMyAdmin) available at your web host ?

IPB database needs to be imported into web server through that database manager

Merge system's compressed pack consists of merge named folder.
that folder along with its contents needs to be uploaded to your files server

you can upload merge system's zip file & extract it through file manager at web host

as per the instructions I was given I downloaded it to my hard disk.  I believe I have uploaded it to the myBB folder - I don't know for sure if I have, but something uploaded somewhere...

I know of it, yes...

Nope, still don't understand what you're telling me to do.

I've unzipped the merge system, now what do I do?  Blush
you can upload merge.zip file to your MyBB files server (as suggested earlier)
and extract its contents by using file manager at your web host

after extracting merge folder,
visiting your forum URL/merge/ with your web browser should open the Merge Wizard.
nope, still don't understand what you're saying...

How do I "upload merge.zip file to your MyBB files server" ?

How do I "and extract its contents by using file manager at your web host "?

I've already unzipped the merge.zip file on my laptop, was I not supposed to do that?

What did you want me to do with phpAdmin?

Sad
Please see here. Once you've downloaded the merge zip fro MyBB's website you now need to put it in your File Manager (where the rest of your files are located).  To do so:
  • Within the .zip folder downloaded from MyBB's site, there's a folder called "Merge".
  • The said "Merge" folder needs to be uploaded to where your MyBB forum is being kept. So for example, if your forum is at http://domain.com, then you would upload the Merge folder to your root directory (normally called public_html in cPanel). If your forum is in a sub-directory like http://domain.com/forum/ then you would need to upload the Merge folder to public_html/forum/.
  • Once uploaded, browse to http://domain.com/merge/ and begin the process. You may want to review the Merge Doc.
