Though not necessarily "trending" there is a built in function for show related threads. The option is in the ACP under configuration->Show Thread Options->Show 'Similar Threads' Table
The Similar Threads table shows threads that are relevant or not relevant (depending on settings selection) to the thread being read.
That places by default the table below the thread and corresponding posts...., but if you want the same feature but added directly in first post/thread start then you could try this plugin: https://mods.mybb.com/view/similar-threa...first-post
