Many people have been wondering why MyBB has been pushing for all software to be compliant with 7.1 or newer versions of PHP.

Yea, but even with PHP 7.1.xx, the end of life is not until December 2019.
That's enough time for MyBB to be changed to be compatible with PHP 7.2.xx.
End of life isn't an immediate issue. It just means you're not receiving security updates. And if you're on shared hosting, you don't get all the security updates anyway.
Yes, it's something to be mindful of, and something you should consider resolving, but it's not as though dead on 3 December, you can't use PHP 7.0 anymore.
Some linux distributions continue to support older PHP versions after official EOL by backporting security fixes.
