MyBB Community Forums

So I have been playing with a few forums, (Many over the years). As usual I have settled back on MYBB as it has a lovely Calendar feature and wysiwyg.
I have installed this besides Wordpress but not linked to it. After the install I took a potty break for 2 minutes and had 5 signup spammers, on a fresh install.

I did the invisible captcha, and got two more.
I did recaptcha and got a few more.
I did "Stop forum Spam", and this has kind of stopped them for now.

My issue is I am spending my time fixing security issues and not setting up the site. Is there a good fix? All forums seem to have this issue

Require email validation and add a few "Security Questions" like

"Remember, Remember the ___ of November"
