I will be soon converting from phpbb 3.0.12 to mybb. So, I am checking all things.

In the Merge panel it says that a version of mybb has to be installed. Will have to be installed in the root directory? Because I am moving my forum from a sub-domain to the root domain.

And also it says that I have to have a backup of my database. Here I didn't understand clearly what copy of database? The sql fileĀ  of my database or the gzip file which I have been made through phpbb ACP.
MyBB forum can be installed anywhere you like.
merge system's folder needs to be uploaded as a subfolder of MyBB installation.

your phpBB database can be sql or gzip (depending on your web server)
it needs to be imported into the same web server of MyBB installation

i.e. MyBB's database & phpBB's database should exist on the same server

I have both. And my Mysql file is about 40 mb. Hope it isn't too much!!

Now this file say sql one. Does it have to uploaded at the root directory as sql?
your phpBB database should be imported into web server
(by using database manager like phpMyAdmin / webAdmin ..)

I am using godaddy so they gave backup/restore for MYSQL Databases. So, I have to restore the sql file in it?

I actually don't see any phpMyadmin or webadmin in my cpanel of godaddy.
please see few search results => godaddy cpanel database import

basically you have to create a new database (with unicode character set)
then go to its phpMyAdmin interface & then import your phpBB database

Yep found it. But don't know how to use it though. And as I will be changing my hosting plan within godaddy so I will have a fresh database too.

I will contact them how to do it. But you are certain that my sql backup will work for phpMyadmin?

Yes.

So, I wanted to try the system in a free server first before running it to my live site.

I wanted to import the sql file but the server is saying max connection out so I uploaded the gzip file which I have made through Backup section of phpbb ACP.

Now I ran the merge system. But its stuck at 'users'. Any suggestions?!

please see similar problem & fix here
[obviously you have to work with file(s) in phpBB3 subfolder of Merge system]
