Firstly, there is no PM alert for mentions.
Secondly, alerts are working fine for me on MyBB 1.8.20. Let me do some testing this weekend, just to make sure everything is in order. In the mean time, if you want to PM me some temp credentials (admin), I can take a look to see if there is some issue with your board is causing the issue.
