I am running small website where I usually see only 3~5 people online in past 15min (mybb statistic shows it).

But sometimes, it gets more than 100 people in very short time that is usually done in a minute (query "show variables like '%max_connect%';" says max_connections hit 150), and it just terminates mybb service for short time (it automatically recovers few minutes later)

I do not know why it happens. Getting 150people for just one minute in a small website where only 3~5 people exist never makes sense to me.

What causes this? and how can I prevent mybb from showing an error when facing this kinds of thing again?

One thing that pops up in my mind is...

Are you using a FREE hosting provider?

Many of those 100 logins are most likely bots... search engine, spam, or carding bots. Those bots will bump up your login attempt count.

yes i saw some bots on mybb member online status that comes from google, bing, discord, yandex, and some others

are those 100+ bots sent to my website on purpose by some1 else? Why is it happening? Usudally it maintains 3 people with well knowm bots such as google, bing, discord but never crash with those well-known bots.
That is server side problem not yours, Actually it is not a real problem, you may be on a free host they limited your connection.

Actually it *is* a real problem; but the onus is on the host, and not OP.
Thank you very much all for answering! Yeah I found those bots were causing.
