Can someone please tell if is better to use the default .htaccess or .htaccess-nginx or both?

If you're using Apache, use the .htaccess, if you're using Nginx, use .htaccess-nginx. It's not a case of one being better than the other, they're designed for completely different web servers, so you need to use whichever one is relevant.
