As mybb is 99% dynamic content, would it speed up page load and make some improvements to the caching?

varnish might speedup page loading but it badly affects cookie system.
actually we often suggest to disable varnish [see few search results]

by default varnish doesn't cache pages with cookies and with .php on end. So yeah it's most likely useless
