I'm sorry I didn't reply to this thread sooner. I've never used custom profile fields before, so I thought it was about time I took the time to do some research and learn.
Once you have created your custom profile field in the administration control panel, the first thing you need to do is look at the ID assigned to the new field. When I created a test field, its ID was 4.
Then, to add the field to the postbit, you need to go to the postbit template and call the field using the ID you just looked at. Going back to my example, the ID was 4, so to output the value of my custom profile field, I needed to add $post[fid4] to the template. If the ID was 5, it would be $post[fid5] etc.
That seems to be all there is to it, but I'm going to look at it in some more detail this afternoon.
