The backups are gzip compressed, which will probably account for the reduction in size. The best way to check they're backing up correctly would be to create a new test database, and import one of the backups to that, and then make sure it has all the same data as your live database.

The DB backup is a dump (just text) and gz (or any compression tool) compress essentialy text, so having a ratio 1/5 is pretty normal.
If you unzip the file, your resulting textfile will be around 50M. But not exactly the same size as your DB, your DB is not a flat file.
