If you want to have a responsive theme with 1.8x, then my suggestion is to go with any Free MyBB Responsive theme at Extend Section or you can take @labrocca suggeston to buy a premium design based on your requirements.
1.9x will be different and there are going to be changed for sure but if you wish to wait till that time for your project then good luck.
