You'll have to modify the core of MyBB, which is deprecated, and most browsers will make an alert, or block the content.

I'm finding even with cached images on threads with lots of thumbs I'm getting broken results. So with it being blocked that answers my question.

It makes absolutely no sense to run a website on secure HTTPS - but exclude some contents (e.g. attachments, images etc.).
If your website has a certificate and is running on SSL, then include all contents using SSL, too! There is no need for your abnormal intention!
Else your browser will complain about a non-secure connection. Even search engine bots may degrade your site.
