Every few days a forum - that does not have any new posts in it - has the new post forum icon that says it has a new post within it, but there are no new posts in that forum. They seem to be lighting up (signifying there is a new post within them) but there are no new posts in that forum.
What's going on? Have other admins had this problem?

Does this forum have a sub-forum / child forum? And one a while ago did this sub-forum have new posts?

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you are getting at. One of the forums (out of 9) has a sub-forum and it doesn't seem to be hit with any of these false positives more than any of the other ones.
I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing.. but maybe you could take a look at this option at AdminCP:
Configruation > Board Settings > Forum Display Options > Attempt to Mark Parent Forums as Read
