Which number do you want to put ? The thread id ? or the number of the thread in the forum ? And it will be shown in desc order (oldest thread will have the lower number)
Any other will be irrelevant (not unique, not linked to a specific thread, depending on page size, ...).

This is my idea:
In page 1 of forumdisplay:
Set first thread is number 1
Set second thread is number 2
...
Set last thread is number 20
In page 2 of forumdisplay:
Set first thread is number 21
Set second thread is number 22
...
Set last thread is number 40
and so on...
And it will be shown in desc order by creation time (newest thread will have the lower number)
Example: Easy to find a thread with number 55 in page 3 of forumdisplay.

If a new thread is created, the thread 55 become 56... What is the interest ?
