I may look for a paid theme later but at the moment I just want a free theme that looks decent on even small mobile devices without any ads.

Is there anything better than BootBB that I've missed?
I considered Emerald and NetPen. Would it be possible to remove the ads from those, or not?

I think you would be able to remove ads by editing templates. For themes, there are varierty of themes out there which may suit your requirements. Everyone has different taste so I am sure you will find your favorite on MyBB Extend
