When using a plugin like this one that hides post content from guests, will crawlers like Google also be affected? I was concerned that keywords might be an issue for crawlers to track.

I was also wondering if I could get some general input on how hiding content from guests can be harmful to your site. Is it necessary? I want to incentivize registrations but don't want this technique to be harmful.

Not familiar with that plugin, but crawlers using guest permissions  should hit no permission trying to crawl the thread.  Really no different than other protected areas of your board.  This thread related:

Edit:  That plugin looks a bit old, so look out for compatibility issues.
