Seems I've heard of something vaguely like this before.

Good work finding those APIs. Had contemplated doing the same thing but it seemed like quite a task to research and pick the best. Are they free? And regardless, do they have any limits in terms of number of image optimisations per forum per day or similar?

They are both free, but TinyPNG seems to have limits with a business model behind, whereas reSmush.it has fair limits. I'd recommend reSmush.it, I kept TinyPNG because it was the first I added (plus both have different features).

Yes, this is indeed a similar plugin to one that already exists But this is not open source, so it competes in a different market
