I want to have a sub-forum where it is only allowed to the thread opener to post new replies.
Except for admins of course.

Any extensions or settings available for that?

Go in the sub-forum settings and use custom permissions for registered group:
- Can post threads => yes
- Can post replies => no
- Can reply to own threads => yes

Do that for all groups which are usually allowed to post replies and are not admins nor moderators
