My advice is to leave configuration of the canonical tag alone. Most webmasters don't understand it and configure wrongly most of the time. A good example is with pagination. Pagination should hardly ever be canonicalised onto the root URL. There's protection against this because Google will reject the choice of canonical and put it's own instead, usually the paginated page. This can be confirmed now with the inspection tool in webmaster tools.
