Hi,

I would like to ask if it is possible to install, update and modify plugins + themes via FTP instead of downloading in the administration. And to which directory the files are uploaded.

Most plugins must be uploaded via FTP. For themes, you may have to upload them if they have additionnal contents (pictures).

Usually, plugins archives contains the whole directory structure from root directory, just unzip and upload. If plugin only contains a .php file (really rare), upload it to your inc/plugins/ directory.
In all cases, read the install/upgrade notes.
