I get this error after I made the modifications to index.lang.php for the online today mod.

This error would tend to indicate that there are spaces before the opening <?php tag in inc/languages/english/index.lang.php. I recommend you open that file and remove any spaces before the <?php tag. However, do not use Notepad to do this. Use a different text editor.
