Reading this thread, don't see any mention of the actual theme.  @Matt's comments are developer console observations from what I've seen.  That - and he knows what'll work with current MyBB.

Seems to me you have your answer - The theme author needs to update the theme.

If not possible - try another - but up-to-date theme.  Or use the MyBB default.

I am using the Default, but also am trying to fix the purple theme, Matt has been extremely helpful and maybe he's able to fix it.
The original author hasn't been on here since 2018 and he's not responding to messages
