I'm running 1.8.29. 

When anyone replies to a private message with the quote tags:

[quote="netllama"]
stuff to quote
[/quote]

the received message never parses the quote tags at all, and simply renders them as message text.

Quoting works just fine in normal forum posts.

Is this a bug, or something that needs to be configured somehow?

That's not what is being auto generated when quotes are created.

are sure you are using orginal mybb files ? (Especially JavaScript files)

Yes sounds like a plugin issue, as not had any other reports of this and doesn't happen here.
