One tool that would be nice is some sort of automatic backup method, which would allow the database to be move to a separate location, such as email.

You can already back-up your database from within the admin cp, just download it to your computer or - depends on what you prefer - put it on your mailbox.

It will be possible in 1.4 version. I suggest you to wait for it.
I still recommend backing up DBs via a cron.
zinga, i tried using dreamhost wiki's guide to set up a cron but its rather dense. is there something more "for dummies" that i could read?
First i recommend always and only backing up a db through your server provider.
Many server hosts have a built in auto backup if you want it.. mine does.
I have mine set to auto backup the board files and db once a day.
Check your host/server acp .. you may have this fetcher.
