Which MyBB version are you running?

Typically, this was happening when a warning occurred, which prevented shutdown functions/queries from running: updating thread counts is one of those queries.

That was fixed in MyBB 1.8.34 by PR #4638.

If you're still encountering the error on MyBB 1.8.34, then there must be some other cause.

Then upgrade to 1.8.34, or, in the meantime, apply that PR's patch:
