today when i went online to check on my forum i noticed that one of my members had a * next to his username in the 'who's online' section on the main page. Is there any specific reason for this?

Yes, there is. You as admin can see all members in the "Who's Online" List even when a member has checked "Hide me from Who's Online" in his/her UCP. So when a member with that setting is online, you as admin will see his/her username with a * after it, normal users wont see that username in the list.
LOL...unless you have it set up so that normal users can see them.

How to block this feature ("Hide me from Who's Online") for some gid's?
