I know that you choose your beta testers from worthy members of the community, but even proprietary softwares can let you apply some time before the stable release (like live messenger, wich let msgplus developers to program the version 4).
I'm working on a new template, this time div based (kinda web 2.0.), but as the 1.4 stable release is yet far, I'm afraid my work will be wasted. So I'll give it a try: is there a way to apply just for the templates before mybb 1.4 becomes definitive?
