Well, basically, I'd like guest to be able to see the names of some forums, but not the list of threads within those forums.

I set permissions to:
Can View Forum Yes
Can View Threads Within Forum No

So I guess that "view threads" actually means "read posts within the thread"?

Is it possible to hide the list of threads from guests?

Admic CP -> Forum Management -> Permissions -> # Unregistered / Not Logged In [set permissions] (for the forum you want to disable the thread viewing for guests) -> [select] Use Custom Settings Below -> Can View Forum (set to NO) -> Update Permissions

Repeat this for each forum you want to hide its threads for guests (unregistered).

In this way, the guests will only be able to see the forum name in the index but will not be able to view the thread titles inside this forum.
