Some forums have certain forums/threads, which would be recommended for a new member to view or post in.
To make sure that the new user won't miss any of these, it would be useful to have a plug-in which would guide the new user through those tasks.
It would add a guide navigation toolbar to the top of the forum list, with an optional new user welcome message. It would also have a navigation with back and forward buttons for steps, and the description of current step.
It would highlight the forums and threads necessary to pass through to find the particular forum/thread. Once the selected action is completed, it would jump over to the next step, with an optional message.
