i put in the FQDN instead of 'localhost'
and made sure the case of the database name was correct.
This got me through
the localhost of the server was pointing to 127.0.0.1 only.
ok, it started up. now to setup up the forums and users ...

That's normal and you should shut off requests to mysql outside localhost for security.
