Can anyone please tell where I can find the line that goes between the post and signature, and if it can be replaced for something other than just a line, for example if I'd like to add...

Instead of the straight line, can this be done and if so how?

While working on a theme I've found that the line is now missing and I'm not sure where it can be added again

I think the template is called postbit_signature. You should find a <hr /> which you can replace with whatever you want.

^^ Yup, that template and you will want to find

<hr size="1" width="25%"  align="left" />

and replace it with ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well this did work except it has the signature showing next to the lines, and not underneath it.

Add a <br /> after your ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Does it really work? I would remove the line all together.
